Chuunin Hotaru

Family History: Hotaru comes from an entirely non-ninja family for as long as she or any of her family members can remember. The earliest family history passed down tells how her ancestors lived on the outskirts of what eventually became Snow Country. They lived as farmers under the protection of Hidden Snow until one day a ninja came by their house and recruited Hotaru’s older brother Ryuro to the Academy. Only when Ryuro failed and came back to live at home did Hotaru get her chance, taking her brother’s place (in an agreement with the Yukikage) so he would not be trailed as a Missing Nin. She’s been battling the stigma of failure her family name carries ever since, trying to win honor back to her family.

Personality: Quieter when she was young and a bit of a loner due to the stigma of her brother’s failure and her own general lack of ability, Hotaru has grown in confidence as her abilities have grown, too. While still generally quiet around those she doesn’t trust, it is a quiet confidence that now rules her personality. She is trustworthy, loyal to a fault, and easily hurt if that loyalty is betrayed. Her utmost loyalty is to her master, Jounin Sutiibu, and she wants more than anything to earn his respect. These days she focuses on maintaining a warrior spirit – bravery, cool head under fire, and quiet confidence and respect. Of course, she’s still young, and often slips back into old habits.

Personal Bio: Hotaru didn’t do all that well in Academy; although she was very smart, she lacked the ability to perform skills on a practical level, and would get frightened and easily freeze up on missions. Her particularly small supply of chakra did not help this, and she often got in the way of her two teammates, her best friend Garuki and the older, cockier Katana. During one particularly difficult mission as a Genin however, she was forced to protect them, and in her desperateness stumbled upon a hidden talent, the ability to control fire.
This fire-controlling technique was dangerous, difficult, and used large amounts of chakra, so Hotaru kept it secret for the next year, trying in vain to teach herself its proper usage but never risking it in battle. During her team’s first Chuunin exam in Konoha, though, she found need to use it again when battling Hyuuga Hinata. Hinata’s cousin Neji stopped the match before it could end in disaster, and later took Hotaru aside to explain to her a hidden past she did not know – the Yoruhana family had actually been a powerful Konoha clan, distant relatives (like the Uchiha) of the Hyuugas, before her 8th great-grandfather had left for good to become a farmer in the hills of Snow Country. With him died any knowledge of the clan’s Double Bloodline – Hibana, or “Chakra Spark”, and Kokugan, or “Dark Eyes”. That is, until Hotaru had accidentally unleashed the Hibana.
Now with knowledge of the eye-jutsu that allowed her to properly control the fire chakra, Hotaru trained hard and began to rapidly improve. Against a great opponent of her own village, she managed to put on quite a show in the finals of the Chuunin Exam, and now that she had both calm under fire and ability to go along with her previous intelligence, was promoted to Chuunin of Hidden Snow. She now works as a supervisor for her old teammates, and is constantly training her two Bloodlines – Hibana is still very dangerous to use, and Hotaru doesn’t yet feel safe using it unless she is forced to. Still, she feels that some day it may just become her secret weapon and allow her to rise to the rank of Jounin, restoring the honorable name of her Clan.

Weapon of Choice: Her own bare hands. Hotaru loves weapons training, but is really quite terrible at it…she prefers taijutsu or, if push comes to shove, her bloodlines.

Jutsus:
Genjutsu:
-Essentially none. Hotaru has no talent for genjutsu whatsoever; her only talent is the ability to recognize and dispel it.
Ninjutsu:
-Chakra Warmth Jutsu – the basic jutsu taught to all Snow Genin which converts a small amount of chakra into a constant supply of warmth throughout their body – a must during winter, and allows them to wear whatever they want.
-Aside from this, Hotaru normally reverts to the basic ninjutsu, especially the basic water/snow jutsu her village is famous for. She’s working toward molding these basic jutsu with her Bloodlines, but hasn’t mastered any of these original ninjutsu yet.
Taijutsu:
-Was taught Juuken while training with Hyuuga Neji, mostly for the purposes of learning chakra control. Of course, she can’t see tenketsu, so she can’t use it in its original form. Instead, she combines the soft strikes with flaming chakra from her hands and feet, using them as weapons.
Kekkei Genkai (Bloodline Limit):
The dual bloodline: Kokugan Hibana
-Kokugan/Dark Eyes – Stemmed from, and much inferior to, the Hyuuga Byakugan. Its only real ability is that of being able to see chakra, even in trace amounts, and to be able to differentiate between kinds of chakra. Appears physically as dark, almost black, pupil-less eyes.
-Hibana/Chakra Spark – The members of the Yoruhana Clan are born with two types of chakra: the normal blue type, and a separate unique type. This unique chakra, when controlled, can set any normal chakra on fire. Of course, since the user and his/her allies have normal chakra too, this is an exceedingly dangerous technique if the user does not have exceptional chakra control. It also spends a lot of chakra, so the user should have a good supply – if not, they will have to rely on times of intense emotion to cause their chakra levels to rise. It is for this ability that the clan (Night Flower, as in, flame) is named.

Likes: Snow, the phoenix, traveling, stars, training until exhaustion, kimonos, ramen, and her friends.
Dislikes: disappointing her sensei, getting in the way, being looked down upon or prejudged, overly warm weather.

Future Dreams, etc: Ever since meeting Sutiibu sensei for the first time with his ANBU mask on, it has been Hotaru’s dream to make it into the ever-elite village ANBU squad. She even knows just what her mask would look like. That would also end any quarrels as to the ability of her clan, despite her brother’s failure. Aside from that, she dreams of the perfect guy (who has yet to show up) and hopes that when she finds him they’ll live happily ever after.

Note: Yes, that's an ANBU mask beside her - in NFC the ANBU are a separate rank, but in real Naruto Chuunin can become ANBU, as my Hotaru does...so that's why it's there. You can choose to ignore it and consider her a normal Chuunin-ranked ninja who collects ANBU masks because she daydreams of becoming one, if you wish

Well, this is a special treat for those of you following my fanfic and/or my many pics of my Naruto OC, Hotaru...you'll notice this isn't her usual outfit and hairstyle...what you are seeing is a special sneek peek at ANBU/Chuunin or Jounin (can't decide which yet) Hotaru! ^_^ I figure the Naruto characters got redisigned when they became Chuunin...so Hotaru would probably want a new outfit when she got to the ANBU, too. (she needed to get those pesky long sleves out of the way for her special technique anyway XD )
Words can not describe how happy I am with how this came out. Really, quite pleased. Maybe I'll even enter it in the next NFC contest....maybe.
In any case, I like this one. Which is why I made an ID out of it.
(btw, I submitted it in non-ID form like this mostly so I can count it as a fanwork for NFC )
So...yeah. I drew the lineart when I was supposed to be doing Japanese, it only took about an hour to come up with this, only a couple to paint in PS so that's pretty fast for me.
